Picture books for older readers

Just because it’s a picture book,
doesn’t mean it’s a CHILDREN’S book.

Just because it’s a picture book,
doesn’t mean it’s a bedtime story
for kindergartners.

I’ve illustrated two creepy, funny picture books, both written by the wonderful Sigi Cohen: My Dead Bunny, and There’s Something Weird About Lena.

Please note that these books are for OLDER readers, i.e. middle primary and above.

Some younger kids will be fine with them, and a few slightly older kids still won’t be okay with them. Your mileage may vary. But I’m sure that you, the parent/librarian/teacher, will be the best judge.

I especially love reading these books with upper primary and secondary students; they’re great for teaching visual literacy. Plus they’re spooky and silly and hilarious!

My Dead Bunny is about a pet rabbit that dies and turns into a zombie.

Hilarity ensues.

There’s Something Weird About Lena is the sequel to My Dead Bunny. There’s a new kid in school, and she’s just a bit … odd.

Is it her beastly laugh? Is it her pernicious pranks? Is it her tendency to bite? It’ll take a band of courageous classmates to discover the shocking truth.
