Events for July

NB: Western Australia enters a four day lockdown from 12.01am Tuesday 29 June. Some of the events below may be rescheduled. I’ll update the details as I have them.


It’s a super-busy month ahead, featuring a 10th birthday celebration for my first book on July 10!

The Last Viking is 10 years old (already!), so we’re having a Viking Crafternoon to celebrate.

July ??: Perth Comic Arts Festival (free)

NB: due to the current lockdown in Perth, PCAF is being rescheduled. A new date will be announced as soon as possible.

The Perth Comic Arts Festival is back!

There’ll be a Market Hall full of local comics makers sharing their latest and greatest creations. Get hands-on and learn some new comics making skills of your own at the Big Top Comics Spiegeltent. Listen to some of Australia’s most exciting creators reveal their inspirations, techniques and experiences in our Talks series. Then immerse yourself in the delightful comics exhibition ‘Message in a Bottle’ at the Spectrum Project Space.

I’ll be selling and signing books in the Market Hall on Saturday July 3 from 10am-4pm. Come say hi!

July 9: Cartooning and Comics Workshop (for kids) – SOLD OUT

Join me at Bunbury Library to learn the basics of cartoon drawing and comics-making.

We’ll cover facial expressions, creating characters, drawing bodies, drawing backgrounds, speech bubbles, sound effects, story planning, you name it – all the skills you’ll need to start making your own comics.

July 9: Clay Maquette Sculpture Workshop (for kids) – SOLD OUT

Join me at Bunbury Library for a clay ‘maquette’ workshop.

I’ll guide you through the process of building a model of a character you design. Learn how to go from a 2D drawing to a 3D model using clay and simple tools.

Perth people: to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Last Viking, we’re having a birthday party / Viking Crafternoon!

There’ll be fun craft activities like making your own Viking helmet and shield, making pet dragons, and getting some Viking warrior facepaint. Plus test your strength with Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. ⁠

We’ll read the book, and there’ll be copies for you to buy and get signed by the creators – i.e. me and author Norman Jorgensen. ⁠

July 13 & 15: creating a picture book (for kids) – SOLD OUT

Join me for two workshops over two days where I’ll show you how to create your own picture book!

On day 1 I’ll share tips and tricks to help you write your own picture book manuscript featuring an amazing animal character. On day 2, you’ll put pen to paper and start illustrating, developing a concept for your characters and a cover for your story using the Procreate app for iPad.

WHEN: Tuesday 13 July 2021, 10.00am – 12noon;
and Thursday 15 July 2021, 1.00pm – 3.00pm.

July 21: digital illustration using Procreate (for adults)

Want to make art on your iPad? Join me and discover the potential of the Procreate app. Learn the basics of digital illustration from a published, professional illustrator (i.e. me).

NB: iPads will be supplied for use at this workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own (provided you have Procreate installed).

July 26-30: Littlescribe Mini-Writing Festival (online)

A children’s writers festival like no other.

The Littlescribe Mini-Writing Festival is a live interactive event for schools across Australia and New Zealand. Over 5 days, 15 authors will give 15 unique 45min workshops to students in classrooms across two countries. There’ll be an illustrator joining all those sessions, too, doing live drawings and note-taking … some guy called James Foley.

WHEN: Monday July 26th – Friday July 30th
TIME: 9:30am-2:40pm AEST (7:30am-12:40pm WA time)

AGES: 5-8yo, 7-10yo, 10-14yo
COST: $5/student (whole school price; min. 10 students per class)
